It must be something I can put in the middle of the table and everyone helps themselves.

I don't get what you really want....

Any meal is 'family style' if you put it on the table in platters or casseroles and people pass it around...

Spaghetti and meatballs....
Make your own tacos or fajitas....
Fried chicken pieces with cornbread and whatever veggies you like....
Chinese food, homemade or take-out....

Just about any meal can be made family style....

How about appetizers for dinner? Make a salad and then a bunch of finger food....

BTW one of our favorite family meals to sit around and eat slowly is fondue.... food cooks slowly, so it's very relaxing and you eat slowly, enjoying the meal.

good quality beef like tenderloin cut into 1 inch chunks... cook it in peanut oil heated in the fondue pot... have various sauces around.... salad or veggies on the side.... rice is good with it..

You can also do a mandarin soup pot with the fondue, putting chicken broth in the pot and people put veggies and chicken (and even shrimp) in to boil until they are cooked... at the end you eat the soup.

Is this what you meant?

Homemade pizza and a salad is always a nice sit around the table family meal. And easy too. Just buy the pizza dough at the local market roll it out and top with everyones favorites and mozzarella (like onion, peppers, mushrooms ect.)

All you need to add is a big green salad!

KING RANCH CHICKEN CASSEROLE

1 large onion, chopped
1 large green bell pepper, chopped
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
2 cups chopped cooked chicken
1 (10 3/4-oz) can cream of chicken soup, undiluted
1 (10 3/4-oz) can cream of mushroom soup, undiluted
1 (10-oz) can diced tomato and green chiles
1 teaspoon chili powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon pepper
12 (6-inch) corn tortillas
2 cups (8 oz) shredded Cheddar cheese, divided

Sauté onion and bell pepper in hot oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat 5 minutes or until tender. Stir in chicken and next 7 ingredients; remove from heat.

Tear tortillas into 1-inch pieces; layer one-third of tortilla pieces in bottom of a lightly greased 13- x 9-inch baking dish. Top with one-third of chicken mixture and 2/3 cup cheese. Repeat layers twice.

Bake at 350° for 30 to 35 minutes.
Note: Freeze casserole up to 1 month, if desired. Thaw in refrigerator overnight, and bake as directed.

Yield: Makes 6 to 8 servings

Core and slice some apples into a casserole dish. pour one Diet Mountain dew over them (should fill the bowl). Sprinkle cinnamon, nutmeg and splenda over the top. Cook covered in the oven or on the grill along side other items being cooked.

It's poached apples and they are delicious. You can cook them until they are as soft as you want them for older family that have dentures or babies that can't chew well yet. And there's no sugar other than the natural sugar of the apple so the diabetics in the family will enjoy them too. They are high in fiber so Grandpa might appreciate them helping his system regulate.

I do this with my family, except we do it in the living room, on weekends during a family movie. We call it a carpet picnic..lol
I make several different "trays". Shrimp cocktail, a veggie and dip, sliced cheeses and pepperoni with crackers. Why not, who says every meal has to be traditional, and it's fun. Not to mention healthy!

If you're into fried foods, make a fried food platter. Wings, mushrooms, cauliflower, zucchini, potato wedges. Serve with different dips. (not so healthy, but on occasion won't hurt)
