What? Do you mean if someone calls and you say, "Can I take a message?" I would imagine that's just force of habit and it will take some time to adjust to say, "I'm sorry, so and so died." It also may be less painful to simply take a message from someone who is only a casual acquaintance of the deceased, rather than get into a long discussion about when they died, how they died, when the funeral was, etc.

My father in law passed away 13 years ago and there are still phone calls coming in at times for him, usually from telemarketers but I just say he's passed away.
I guess you could like a prayer say so and so called for you today if you take a message.

What's worse is when the deceased had recorded the answering machine message and no one changes it...so strange to hear a person you know to be dead saying "I can't come to the phone right now, but if you leave your name and number I'll get back to you."

As oblivious as I am to change (Aspergers, gotta LOVE it...), I'd probably do it just because, in the moment I was answering the phone, it wouldn't occur to me that the person had recently died.

Shouldn't you be calling a psychic hotline or some other such silliness for this question? Maybe try Ghostbusters.
