Usually this means a negative response to whats ever asked. The silence is caused by not wanting to hurt you, but not knowing the right words to use.
In cases of this kind, silence is not a good thing.

it depends entirely on the quality of the question asked... males aren't that stupid, and a silence can often indicate the question has a 'hidden' meaning, or inherent issues whichever way it's answered....
sometimes 'yes' or 'no' doesn't help, thus silence is a safe and convenient escape route.... we know it doesn't help, but really, if a question is answered with silence, its probably worth having a think about the question asked...

Either
1) We know we'll get a bollocking when we answer.
2) It's a silly question.
3) We don't know the answer
4) We're doing something else - come back and ask us again later. We can only concentrate on one thing at a time.

It means I've lost the plot and got bored and gone drinking beer at the pub with my mates coz it was a stupid question that bore no relevance to anything I was thinking or talking about and I got bored and my mind wandered uncontrollably to my happy place!

I know your asking men but I think when someone doesn't want to answer its because the answer will be something you wont like and they dont want to lie.

most of the time for me personally it means i know the answer but usually it could hurt the gal im talking to! no wonder we split up before xmas!

i do this all the time and it drives my girlfriend nuts. I'm not sure why I do it, because when she points out i've ignored her I usually give an answer.
