If you want space and power, these are your options
Indica Xeta GVS 1.2 64hp- on road at Rs. 3.2
Indica Xeta GLX 1.4 70hp- on road at Rs. 3.75 (top end version)
Fiat Palio 1.2NV 62hp- on road at Rs. 3.70 at the current discount offers.
extend your budget by 50K and go for the new Chevy UVA

I would recommend these above any Maruti or Hyundai in this price range because these vehicles are a lot more safe and stable and come with fantastic suspensions, making them suitable for both city and highway driving.

If fuel economy is your only concern go for the Alto at Rs. 3.2 on road, but it is a very small car.

Well i suggest the Ford Ikon 1.3 flair. Its not 4 lakhs, but you will have to strech your budget about about 50,000. around 4,50,000.
What u get is a bigger car, as compared to everything else. And a bigger car means, more respect when u drive on the road, as is common in india. The running costs and maintenance are the same of any other car in the same segment.
