hi. my dog is a german shepherd about 2 years old. about 2 months ago he started getting very thin. took him to the best vet in town. he did a test and figured out that he has hepatitis - his liver isnt working and therefore his food isnt digesting properly. ive been going to the vet for 2 months and he hasnt been able to fix him. he keeps getting thinner. he specifically isnt able to digest fats (something about his body not producing lypase enzyme)

what can i feed him and what steps can i take to get him better since obviously my vet is totally lost on what to do

Being a life long illness with expensive therapy, you need to make major decisions on whether you want to try and maintain his health or to humanely euthanize. At 2 years old and continuing to loose weight, this isn't a good sign.

Is he on enzyme replacement therapy? Prescription dog food? Other medications?

When dogs health can not be maintained through medication, therapy and / or diet and the dog is continuing to loose weight, a decision may have to be considered to humanely euthanize and end any suffering.

Also, something that may be helpful is to call the breeder and ask if this has been a problem with this litter or past litters. Any reputable breeder should know about their puppies health and be a life long adviser with any regards to their puppies.

I wish you luck.

The liver is one organ that could regenerate, yet you have not stated how carry your canines is, nor in spite of if he's having different subject concerns. Our medical doctors will use a food called l/d. it is made by using technology weight-alleviation plan and is for liver affliction. in the experience that your canines relatively isn't eating nor eating, then you certainly ought to, as final motel, attempt warming his food, attempt fowl and rice, attempt infant food, or something he might consume. you ought to aim employing broths over the food. Liver affliction will reason nausea, so if there is not any fix on your canines, then he ought to probably be in his final days. i could discover yet another vet, take the bloodwork and decide for a 2d opinion. That way, you have got better than one vet's opinion as to the subject. Ask the vet what the analysis is, and in spite of if or not there's a therapy. Is your canines on drugs for nausea? Did they a minimum of attempt something? Our vet would not purely tell a customer that their canines has a affliction without the two attempting to repair it or telling the customer that the analysis is grave. i could call interior the morning for greater suggestion, till you already be attentive to and purely did not let us know. from time to time I even have seen those canines hospitalized, put in IV fluids and IV antibiotics and that they are able to get better. Ask if it fairly is an selection on your canines. solid luck

Here are some websites that may help:
http://www.2ndchance.info/hepatitis.htm
http://www.vetinfo.com/dhepatitis.html

It is hard to answer your question without knowing which strain. Some are curable, and some are incurable. The incurable ones require IV fluids on a regular basis.

I suggest you switch vets.

Don't take this the wrong way, but your Vet isn't really doing a lot to help your dog is it.
I would take him to another vet, see if he can help any better.

Your Vet should be advising you on whats the best to feed your dog etc....
