I had my ears pierced in the past, and was constantly getting infections. Swollen, hot, painful earlobes, with some pus. I tried nickel free, those marketed for sensitive ears, 24 k gold - all caused problems, so I let the holes grow back together.

I'm wondering would titanium have the same negative effect?

Edited to add: Owlwings, I was always careful to follow proper hygiene. I always rinsed my ears well after every shower, or anytime I washed my hair. I used hydrogen peroxide and neosporin on my earlobes when they were healing. If this was incorrect, i wasn't aware of that - I was following the advice of the piercer.

I would try titanium or surgical steel. Surgical steel is the only thing my body allows me to use haha. You could always try organic earrings like bone, wood, stone things like that...but if you want a stud of some sort then I would go with the first two metals mentioned. Good luck!

Gold should not have caused a reaction. I would suggest that you didn't follow correct hygiene procedure.

Edit: I am sorry, I didn't mean to cause offence. It was just the most likely reason for infection (which the symptoms suggest). I speak from experience of having two daughters, so I know that it can get overlooked!

I agree that gold and titanium are the least likely to cause problems.
