usually, they are advertised local police departments usually auction off lost/stolen items once a year- generally these auctions are advertised in advance. You can always call your local pd to find out when they have the annual auction

Call the local police department. Usually you get forwarded a couple times but the 3rd person will be able to tell you what you need to know. I've gotten some nice stuff there myself.
