"If you're teaching yourself, you already know it."

I don't understand.

I'm teaching myself algebra because I'm reading my algebra book and doing the lessons.

Maybe it has something to do with how you interpret learning and teaching? If you think of learning as more of having facts dropped in your head and teaching being the dropper I guess it might make some sense.

Because people are misinformed.

I can tell you from my experience as a classroom teacher that the teachers I worked with were far from experts in the subjects they were teaching. Most classroom teachers teach from a textbook! Sometimes the absent or daydreaming kids miss out on the teacher's explanation, and learn from the text on their own at home. So they are self-taught as well.

Unfortunately (or fortunately--depending on your point of view), classroom teachers are generally thought to be more knowledgeable than most actually are. They are assumed to be experts in their fields.

So, I think it really all comes back to the fact that people are uninformed or misinformed about education in general which affects their interpretation of homeschooling and all that is associated with homeschooling.

The way I understand it, it refers to some innate leanings or aptitude you would have that makes it much easier for you to learn, say algebra, or painting, or what-have-you all by yourself. Hence it supposes that by this aptitude, you already know it, or at least how to learn it, so that you can teach yourself without outside tutorial help.
Out of the top of my head, really.

well.... If you think about it... You can only teach something you already know..... So.. what you should be saying instead of "I'm teaching myself algebra" is : I'm learning algebra by means of independant studies.....

Minor technicalities ............ in wording.
