I just got a dental cleaning done yesterday. My dental Hygienist said that I have couple of 'pockets' about 5mm deep and that I require intensive antibiotic placements.
How important is this procedure and is there some way of avoiding doing this for now as my insurance does not cover most of this procedure.
Any dentist out there that can provide me with some info?

Family doctor will send you back to your dentist.

Your hygienist should have explained that a 5mm pocket is deep enough that you can't really clean it with floss and a toothbrush. But after a cleaning you may have a little recession, or shrinking of the gums, making that pocket a little smaller. Or maybe she didn't read the depth correctly. Someone else might get a different reading. Did your dentist talk to you at all about them when he did his exam? If he didn't, it may not be as serious as the hygienist led you to believe. If you weren't having any symptoms (bleeding gums or infection) before this cleaning, then you may just need to brush, floss, use Listerine and keep a close watch on the areas for the next 6 months for any changes. Then ask the Dentist about them after your next cleaning to see if they are smaller, or even there. If the dentist didn't advise you to have treatment you're probably safe. Good hygiene during a 6 month period shouldn't cause any increase in the pocket depth if there is not an active infection. If you experience (or have been experiencing) any bleeding, or infection develops, then see the dentist sooner for treatment. Hate to say this, but some hygienist work towards a commission per sale, or have to keep their production up, so she may have been pushing a product to increase either for the month. Always ask your Dentist, he is there to work with you to protect your dental health. If you are unsure about waiting, call your dentist and ask him/her, they know your teeth best. Good luck and I hope I've been of some help with your problem.

PS The intensive antibiotic placement is called a Perio Chip.

I know exactly how you feel. I have you beat by two years with the dentures. It is no fun! How long have you had yours? I do not think I would be a candidate for implants because of jaw shrinkage. I think that would make a big difference. I think the price has gone down and I hope it is possible for you yet. I have felt like Kermit for so long it doesn't make much difference to me anymore. It use to tho.

you will be put first on intensive antibiotics. to kill the bacterias that has been there in your mouth. 5mm pocket is not normal and it also needs some deep cleaning so that you will not loose your tooth. better to do this now thatn regret it later. the plaque has gone to the roots and you need deep cleaning under freezing or probably flap surgery...

Please Google search on pockets in your teeth. If appropriate action is not taken as directed by the dentist, you loose the tooth or incur more expenditure in future by way of root canal treatment.
