is this usual has he been missed for some reason the medal is inscribed around the rim with his details and is dated 1917 i have searched these details but can find no trace of his award ican find his campaign medals but not his mm.

Have you been on the National Archives website?? If you search for Campaign Medals for WWI and enter your grandfather's name it should be there. The medal index card should also list Gallantry medals as well. You could try the Regt museum .They should have datails or will certainly know how to track it down.

There were a number of organizations that issued membership medals. They were extremely common after the Civil War. My grandfather had a medal for the 40 and 8 Organization, that referred to the French railcars that could hold 40 men or 8 horses for transport.

So while it may not be a military medal, it could very well be an association related to his military service and something he was rightfully proud of. And it is also possible the medal was awarded by a foreign country, which wouldn't show up in a US listing.

There are also many medals awarded by various civic organizations such as Knights of Columbus.

Try contacting the M.O.D. give his name rank and if possible his serial number and regiment or if you know his regiment contact the regimental museum
