In my circle of people it has turned into either an exchange of gift cards. For Christmas, we make lists of what we want, and it is frowned upon if we deviate from the list. So, I see an increasing lack of creativity of the gift-giver.

First, I think that it depende on the culture that you live in.
fifty years ago (only speaking from a USA standpoint), we did not have the term "regifting."
Just in case you are not familiar with this term, it means:
"Giving a gift to someone that you have gotten and did not use."
Even around Christmas time and all other celebrations, people get gifts that they can't use or do not like.
So, they give that gift to someone else.
We, Americans, accumulate more stuff than most people.
We believe that the newest is the greatest. We want the best, so we have lots of things that we consider out-dated.
Some people have "White Elephant" parties.
This is a party where everyone brings a gift, but the gift was in your house and could have been used, but is not needed anymore.
You wrap it up like you do a normal gift.
THere are now "gift cards," which I find quite impersonal, but serve their purpose.
THey are used when someone does not know what to get you, so they give you a gift card at a certain establishment or store.
I don't think that gifts in America hold the same value as they use to.
It is just an exchange of commodities.
Sometimes I am very specific in my gift giving, yet the receiver either A. does not appreciate it, or B. does not have time to take advantage of the gift.
The best gift that we could give someone is "time."
But, that is not our job.
People are too busy to appreciate the gift of kindness or friendship:
so I guess I will have to stick to monitary things.
And, I don't see that changing anytime soon.
I live ina capitalist nation, it is all about the acquisition of things.
It is getting much more difficult to be creative and to be specific and the person appreciate all the time and effor that you have put into a gift.
In the year 2060, we might all be giving gift cards and/or money.
It will be easy, effortless and you won't waste any time doing it.

I think it will die a little. As people get more in debt they will come to realise it is fairly expensive to buy everyone presents and they simply won't be able to afford it. Perhaps this might make some more creative, use their imaginations and make gifts or be truly giving and actually help the other person instead of giving them something they really don't want or need.

Give gifts when you want too, not when expected.
