Up to 46" lcd are far better. Above this some people say plasma have a very slight edge. If you intend gaming on it avoid plasma. The best on the market at present is the Sony Bravia range.

With the advances in LCD there is little difference, If you need a TV up to 46" go for LCD, but check the response time is max of 6ms if you watch sport. Over 46" Plasma is at the moment the only choice. Plasma has better Black tones, LCD is brighter. LCD also uses less power and the screens are longer lasting.
Best is to see the two side by side and see which picture you prefer.

If your looking for a smaller telly then you will have to go for LCD, but if your looking for 42" then you will have to make a decision. If your going bigger then price dictates you will have to go for plasma as massive LCD panels are ridiculously expensive.

So if your looking for a 42 incher then base your decision on what you see. Panasonic, for example, have invested heavily in plasma technology and their plasma TVs are awesome, where as Samsung LCD wipe the floor with Sonys.

In short, use your eyes to make the decision. Most shops will demo with a computer-animated film, but ask for a demo on a darker film, such as Lord of the Rings. Bright pictures will always look good, but darker scenes will show up impurities in the screens quality.

I cannot stress the importance of getting an HD-ready tv. And when I mean HD TV i mean with and HDMI port with HDCP, other wise you will regret it when it doesn't work with the HD source, if you get one in the future. Most TVs do have this now but if you get a budget model it may not.

LCD if only because they use about one third of the power used by a plasma screen.
