for a long run it can help replace the sugar your body burns from running, but it would take more than just sucking on the candy to replace the calories needed, so you are less aft to hit the wall as it is called when your legs will not go any further because they have used up all the glucose reserves, other than that there may be a danger is swallowing it whole and something chewable would work better. It could keep your mouth from drying out from forming saliva but would not act as a replacement to hydration only drinking water or sport drinks would do that

Sucking a piece of candy can actually be dangerous! While running you can actually choke on it. It wouldn't make you feel less breathless. Generally, people breathe through their mouths when they are running long and hard, so sucking something is out of the question. It can also make you more thirsty. I suggest that you don't turn your head while running and don't talk while running. You can also carry a light water bottle and splash your face once in a while. This doesn't actually help you be less breathless but it sure is refresshing :)

Really, it doesn't help anyone I know-it's all a mental thing for me. If you're having trouble breathing, are you sure you're breathing correctly? Breathing incorrectly can make you feel breathless. I've heard that you're supposed to breath through your nose while running, and from experience, it does make you feel a bit less breathless. If you're getting cramps, breath in through your nose and out through your mouth slowly. Kind of off topic here, but hope it helps a little. Good luck!

personally, I'd go for a walkman during the run, and jelly babies after the run. they're (normally) in the goody bag at the end of the london marathon, 3rd best thing about finishing...

It's all psychological, it may take your mind off the pain and your breathing, but be careful you do not inhale it and choke. I used to use a Walkman because if I couldn't hear my laboured breathing I ran a little better and farther.

Truly, I would think it so. Richard Petty used to suck on a towel to keep hydrated.
