Seriously depends on where you plan to be. Cabs are EXPENSIVE, if you take the subway it usually gets you where you want to go and for a lot cheaper. Food, it also depends on where you go. If you go to a small store you can pick up something relatively cheap, if you go to a resturant be prepared to drop a good sum of money. I would bring a few hundred if you are just going to wander around aimlessly. When I go into the city to go to the Met it usually costs me about $50 for everything, but I don't get food or go shopping. That is just train and cab faire.
