I recently saw a programme on the BBC in which scientists were explaining how an iceage or extreme conditions might evolve as a result of shifts in the saltwaterlevel and methane. How proven is all of this?

Well the details are very sketchy!

Last year (december) when I read "NATURE" in my college, there was an article on atmospheric methane sources.
It said that a large fraction of atmospheric methane production is unaccounted for!
The Science community still donot know the amount of methane emitted by trees......this anomaly is accounted for by animal guts and microbial decomposition.

Methane's role as a global warming gas has not been studied as deeply as carbon Dioxide. So there are many loop holes in the Data!

Its easy to predict the aftereffects of excess methane and elaborate on it but how it can occur, the details about the gradual phasing processes cannot be!

So as much of it is real that much is assumption.
