They actually tested this on the show "Mythbusters"

The idea is that a Silver spoon dropped into the neck of a bottle of champagne will prevent the bubbles from running out.

They tests actually showed that the champagne with the spoon went flat faster than just an open bottle does.

it is supposed to help keep the bubbles in sparkling wine. I have found that it does not work and that the sparkling wine closure I received as a gift for the holidays works much better. Also saw the same mythbusters show somebody else mentioned. It does not work.

It is not wine they put the spoon into but champagne (or any sparkling wines). This is supposed to stop the champagne from going flat. Sorry i don't know the science behind it.

If you "cork it" ie had to push the cork into the bottle, the teaspoon helps push the cork down to allow the wine to flow from the bottle.

It is put into champagne bottles to keep the fizz in it longer but its more of a myth than reality.
