I was thinking of a Glenfiddich 12year or a Glenmorrainge 10year, but I wonder about the Macallan or the Glenlivet.

I have also though about blends like the somewhat obvious Chivas regal or possibly dimple.

Thoughts anyone? I'm willing to spend up to about AU$65 but have access to wholesalers so I should be able to buy all of the above witihin this price range.

well thank you both for your answers; it's true that I had setled on the Glenfidich 12yo, I was just looking for confirmation of my decision. In the end however, I happened upon a Glenmorainge gift pack with a classic 10yo and two 'taster' bottles (th shrry and the port casks).

One of my favourite 'drinking' scotches in an attracive box with a bonus two tasters to indicate the possibilities, It won me over. I gave it to him this afternoon and he was very impressed/apprecciative.

thanks again.

Aye - an excellent question! As you may know, there are regional whiskies from all over Scotland to enjoy. As a novice, you want to try them all - but in their lighter forms rather than their most robust expressions.

You'll want to stay with single malts (so the Chivas Blend is off the shelf!) in their lighter forms and once you've found the right combination of taste and nose, you can more deeply explore that regions offerings.

Here are my suggestions for getting started...

Speyside: Aberlour 10yo or The Macallan 10yo
Highland: Dalwhinne 15yo or Oban 14yo
Islay: Bruichladdich 10yo or Caol Ila 12yo
Western Isles: Highland Park 12yo or Scapa 12yo
Lowland: Rosebank 1989 or Auchentoshan 10yo
Campbelltown: Longrow 10yo or Glen Scotia 12yo

Slainte!

I'd start with a blend if he's truly a novice. It is an acquired taste. Of those listed, my choice of the bunch would be the Glenfiddich, as you seem to have instinctively chosen yourself.
