My house has no interior doors. They were all spirited away in a previous life and I have to replace them. I finally found the correct doors and I'm ready to start hanging them. My house is over 100 years old so I'm looking at the old cast iron hinges they sell at so many reproduction hardware stores.

My doors are 1 1/4" thick. I have found hinges that range from 5"x5" to 2 1/2"x2 1/2".

I'm so confused and don't know what to measure in order to get the right size hinges.

Are there guidelines somewhere for this or do I have to order them in a hit-or-miss fashion?

Any help is greatly appreciated. thanks :-)

go to the home depot, buy some hinges, different sizes and colors to see what looks right. measure them (or look on the tag) then order the size you need online. you can easily return the ones you bought. make sure whatever hinges you buy have removable pins so if you ever need to remove the door you can just pop the pins out. most quality door hinges will be like this. this also makes it easier to install the hinges but make sure you measure exactly!!

Being interior doors, their weight should not be a great concern so actually any hinge will do. Select a hing that looks right for the door. It should appear appropriate, not too small and not so big that it stands out. I would think that hinges in the 3" to 3 1/2" range would be right. 5" is way too large unless the rest of the house interior demands its. And 2 1/2" would look too small.

Three inches are the industry standard.
