Most dogs don't do this. There are just very few who do for reasons that is hardly understood. Many things have been suspected as the culprit . It could be intense hunger, calcium deficiency, pancreatic enzyme deficiency or other mineral deficiency. But even dogs which are feed sufficiently still do this. Or even if they are supplemented with calcium or pancreatic enzyme, still this habit persist. So even veterinarians cannot find solution to this problem. The only way is to guard the dog while defecating and soon remove the feces so he won't be able to eat. This is definitely a hard suggestion. Anyway try first feeding your dog until he is full and find out if this works.

Well, I asked that exact question of my vet -- whom I adore and trust wholeheartedly.

He said: "Because he likes it."

He's very direct and to the point. He didn't seem concerned about it, and told me to put a little meat tenderizer in his food. That worked for me. But talk to you vet before doing that if your pup has that problem.

I think t means there is something missing in there diet. Like minerals or something.

sometimes because their food lacks nutrients that they need. sometimes because they just like the smell and/or taste. my puppy does it right now and i'm told he might stop when he gives himself diarrhea.

Same answer as to 99.9999% of ALL the "why does my dog...whatever?"

BECAUSE THEY ARE *DOGS* & dogs DO that until they're TRAINED!
