I wish this were in the Imponderables books! That might give me an answer!!!!!

The first thing is most dogs do not like being petted on the top of head. It feels like a correction. Once you interduce you self to the dog by letting the dog sniff your hand then you touch it under the jaw or along side the face.

Because when a human reaches down to a dog, this is the highest point that the human can reach. That's why a person rubs a horse's nose or pats their flank. We make a connection without giving up our current position or being uncomfortable. (That is, unless they are very small, when we tend to pick them up to be affectionate, to bring us back to said position.) It's human nature to avoid discomfort, even to be nice, unfortunately. Well I just asked my dog Harley,and he said it was better to pat his head than his bum. He might have a point I reckon!! Ha ha ha!!

dogs will keep face us when they wants attention
since the head come first so we pat it first
