We both agree that I should be with kids but I'm worried about financial risks.

I would say as long as it is financially affordable, stay home. The kids need your influence during the early years. Do you have a college education? Could you find a good job if something should happen to your husband? These are also considerations. Make sure the life insurance is sufficient to give you time to find a good job if something does happen. Not just a years income, but several. You don't want to be rushed into doing something you would not be happy doing.

Mbrcatz17: She said HOMEMAKER, not HOME OWNER. But good point anyways.

My wife just went back to work part time after 7 yrs at home to raise our kids. Just make sure that the insurance is enough to cover expenses for some time so you would not have to bring the want ads to the funeral. (hope that didn't sound too rough, I didn't intend for it to.). 2 other things for you to consider:

1. get insurance for you. A big mistake often made by stay at home spouses. If something were to happen to you, your husband will have to either stay home or get child care.

2. get Disability Insurance for him. It could be a fate worse than death! If he becomes disabled & not able to work, & you have no income, you will have to become the sole provider for the children, him & you. You will have to work & take care of all of them. That can be a huge strain. with DI, you can have a portion of his salary still coming in to help out.

not sure what that last answer had to do with a spouse staying home with the kids

as long as you dont divorce and you have enough money in insurance to live off of if something happened to the husband you should be ok,

do you have enough to replace his income, or to pay off the house and college for the kids, and enough to let you get by until you could get a decent paying job?

?? You'd rather be thrown out of your apartment with 30 days notice, than kicked out of your own home with six months notice? How does that make sense?

How is owning a home less risky than renting an apartment? As long as you're not overborrowing to buy the home, you're crazy to NOT own a home. Even if you buy a house, and sell it ten years later for the same amount you paid for it (which rarely happens, btw), then you've lived rent free for 10 years. How is that risky????
