The word "Christian" means "follower of Christ." A Chistian not only patterns his life after Christ, but obeys the commandments of Jesus. If you were to take Christ out of the word Christian, all you'd have left is I-A-N, which basically means "I Am Nothing." Without Christ, one would have no hope. Without Christ, one would not be able to be saved from his past sins. Without Christ, one cannot be born again of the water and of the Spirit.

Many today use the word Christian as a generic term, in other words, to include every other religious organization out there. However, the bible gives us a few responses regarding that because many are under the impression that as long as you base your religion on the bible or some of the bible's principles, God will readily accept you as righteous. Listen as the Word of God speaks! 2 John 9 states, "Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son." The doctrine of Christ was preached throughout the world by Jesus' Apostles, who, with the help of the Holy Spirit, were able to prove that what they spoke and taught was of God. This is the same doctrine that is to be preached, taught and obeyed today, but people decided that it was too narrow and decided to branch off into their own things. That's why there are over 400 denominations in the world today, not to mention the various other religious bodies that doesn't even acknowledge Jesus. Jesus warned, "He that rejecteth me and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him:the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day." If you read the book of Acts, you will see that everyone who became Christians, believed and obeyed the same thing, taught and preached the same thing, and, most importantly, became Christians the exact same way. There is no mention of the "Sinner's Prayer" in the bible. No one ever followed or obeyed it because it didn't exist. Jesus nor the Apostles told anyone to "pray through" to become a Christian. There are ten examples in the bible on what one did to become a Christian and are listed as follows:

1. The Jews at Pentecost (Acts 2:36-47)
2. The Samaritans (Acts 8:5-13)
3. The Ethiopean Eunuch (Acts 8:26-39)
4. Saul of Tarsus (Acts 9:1-18)
5. Cornelius (Acts 10:1-47)
6. Lydia (Acts 16:13-15)
7. The Philippian Jailer (Acts 16:25-34)
8. The Corinthians (Acts 16:24-28)
9. Apollos (Acts Chapter 18-Chapter 19:11)
10. The Ephesians (Acts 19:1-5)

Christians are those that have been "called out" of a world of darkness and have been translated into the kingdom of God's dear son (Colosians 1:13), which is his body, also known as the church (Ephesians 1:22; 5:23; Colosians 1:24). Anyone who claims to be a Christians, but didn't come to Christ in the way specified in the above examples, are only fooling themselves. This is the way the God will accept, because one day Jesus is coming back "...in flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ (2 Thessalonians 1:8)," and all those who claim Christianity, but do not obey the principles thereof, will be exposed completely and punished.

The only viable answer is 'someone who defines themselves as a Christian'. Being a self-referential definition, it's useless - but there is no one single meaning that can fit all self-identified Christian creeds, so if you don't want to enter into a game of 'who's Christian, who isn't' (Jehovah's Witnesses? Unitarians? Catholics?) it's best just to say 'they all are because they say that there are'.

Believing in the divinity of Jesus helps, but even that's not an essential ingredient.

Members of the LOrd's Church were first called "Christian" in Antioch. To be a Christian is to follow HIS WORD as nearly as is possible and to continue to study, worship, and pray for the remainder of our lives to remain as faithful as we can. Have a great week.
