One feature I'm also looking for is a strong flash so I won't have to stand too close to my subjects.

I'm no pro, and I don't have a huge budget either. Maybe in the $200-$300 range.

Quite honestly, at that price level you are not going to get one that has a very powerful flash. Even the built in flash on fairly top of the range DSLRs is only good enough for about 10-12 feet. If that isn't enough, you will need to look round for a compact that takes a separate flash - I can't think of one off the top of my head, however. You may need to go to a good camera store for help.

Your first answer is correct. I suggest you change your criteria in buying a camera. Strong flash in the $200/$300 area..I don't see how. Use flash and increase ISO setting.

Casio has one of the lowest flash and shutter lag on the market. Awesome cameras.
