To strive and struggle for your Lord. Just waking up in the morning and being extremely tired and them having to go to work (or school :D) is a jihad but muslims do it because they believe : ''The Hereafter is far better for you than this first (life.)".
The Jihad involves noticeable effort for righteousness. This means that the effort concentrated in the Jihad is a step in the true and ultimate path of Islam (submission); the effort imposed on one's self. Thus Jihad is solely individual, self-centered and self-interested. This effort is only the doing of good for salvation and pardon of God. The Quran points this out in the following verse:
"The day will come when every soul will serve as its own advocate, and every soul will be paid fully for whatever it had done, without the least injustice." (16:111).
Jihad may also reflect the war aspects in Islam (Submission). The fighting of a war in the name of justice or Islam, to deter an aggressor , for self defense, and/or to establish justice and freedom to practice religion , would also be considered a Jihad .
"You shall strive for the cause of GOD as you should strive for His cause. " (22:78).
The previous Quranic verse incites man to strive , in the cause of God. The cause of God is justice and freedom for all, keeping the Quranic principle, "NO COMPULSION IN RELIGION" (2:256) on top of the list..

Jihad in Islam is the equivalent of the Phrase "Pationate Pursuit of [something] to achieve God's will"....
.... The terms "Holy War" and "Crusades" are only part of Jihad cause Jihad has many forms... one of which is voicing your opinion to those who do not act as God commands....
... it involves working to make things according to God's will, by speech, good deeds and any other form...
... unfortunately many fundamentalists and extremists only focus on the "Holy War" form which has its rules and they are very strict by the way... these rules prohibit every action of terrorism carried nowadyas by Al-Qaeda and their supporters and alikes....
... As a christian I can tell you that living with muslims for 31 years now, they are peaceful people but their problem is that their media are not well up to the challenge of promoting the effective ways of figthing terror through religion.

Jihad is loosely translated as "Holy war" The Koran instructs its followers to declare Jihad on all of its enemies or people that are not of the islamic faith... However many islamic people do not translate this as a literal war. For example they could be practising "Jihad" by simply avoiding things that are deemed wrong, or by trying to convert others to its religion. The more radical Islamic people... well they give the other islamic people a bad name. I am not Islamic, but I feel it is wrong to label them all as terrorist when many of them are indeed very peaceful.

The meaning has changed with times.
It used to be holy war, or a movement against any evil.
Could be a social movement.
Could be a revolution.
Now, it is terrorism.
