A week ago I got my two two bottom wisdom teeth removed. The swelling went down on both sides of my mouth, but now is reappearing on the right side. I am having trouble irrigating the hole on that side as well. If I go back to the surgeon, how is he likely to treat the infection? If antibiotics, what sort?

You shouldn't be irrigating the socket in the first place, maybe gentle swishing but nothing vigorous. You may have dislodged the clot and uncovered the bone causing you to develop a dry socket. If that's the case, you should call your surgeon for emergency appointment.

If infected, they will pack the socket with a medicated material that promotes or stimulates new tissue growth (if you have a dry socket)and kills bacteria. They will also get you on the necessary antibiotics, pain and inflammatory medication. It's usually just a mild penicillin but it just depends on how bad the infection has gotten. He will prescribe a medication best suited to treat your individual case. You've probably noticed a foul smell and taste in your mouth that brushing/gargling just won't remove, that's the infection and it's usually something (like food) lodged in the socket that you can't remove because it's so deep.

An infection like this is serious and could have dangerous health consequences if left untreated. Post-op care is at no charge, this condition is easily treated and very common, so there is no reason to leave it unattended and take a chance with your health. Good luck!

I'm a dentist. Obviously, because I don't know the history of your sister's condition and treatment, I cannot be sure what her current status is. Suffice it to say, though, that generally three days post-operatively is a tad too early to start putting infection at the top of your list of possibilities. The best advice I can offer is this: have your sister go back to the doctor who extracted the teeth and have him/her evaluate your sister to rule out infection. That is the safest, most responsible thing to do.

If you have an infection you need to be treated as quickly as possible.

We now know that infections in the gums can affect the heart. To prevent the heart from being damaged antibiotics are required.

Get going and good luck!

I had this happen to me. I developed dry socket. I went back and the surgeon packed my gums with some sort of green gauze. I had to leave it there for about a week. I went back to the surgeon and he removed the gauze and everything was fine.

Good Luck:)

You should tell your surgeon now because an infection that close to the brain can be very serious.
