Ok all Australian people should know this ad im about to talk about...Its the one for speeding. And the police officer says "If we stop P platers speeding we will stop them crashing". Ok yea thats true. BUT P PLATERS ARE NOT THE ONLY ONES WHO SPEED! It just really annoys me! Im a P plater and yes it is true that the police pick on P platers, and its unfair! Do you think that ad should be changed to, "If we stop the speeders we will stop the crashes"? what do you all think?

Speed doesn't kill people, stupid people kill people!

How many times have you been driving and someone cuts you off because they don't check their blind spots before changing lanes or they are on their phone (which is scientifically proven to be the same as drink driving!!) or maybe weaving through traffic just to get one or two spots ahead anyway? Or perhaps some other of the million things someone in their own little world are doing while driving along?

Speed doesn't kill...people not concentrating while driving kills people!

As for the P-Plater thing...Young drivers are the leading cause of accidents. Especially the ones that have a big "fully sick" car that they don't know how to control properly and drive around like they have been driving forever. Now I'm not saying that EVERY P-Plater is going to be like that...but if you punish the many you might be able to save the few...

As for stats to back me up...I couldn't find any Australian stats (and believe me I looked) but I did find the following link that showed some American stats:

Among licensed drivers, young people between the ages of 15 and 20 have the highest rate of fatal crashes relative to other age groups, including the elderly. In fact, the risk of being involved in a fatal crash for teens is three times greater than for drivers age 65 to 69.

Immaturity and lack of driving experience are the two main factors leading to the high crash rate among teens. Graduated licensing laws, which include a three-phase program that allows teen drivers to develop mature driving attitudes and gain experience behind the wheel, have been successful in reducing teen motor vehicle accidents.

But for Australian roads (and again this is the only information I could find) The research shows that, per capita, more fatal crashes happen in the country than in the metro area (58 per cent versus 42 per cent) and, per capita, the statistics are worse in remote Western Australia. But for serious injury crashes, the pattern is reversed – there are more per capita in the metropolitan area, than in the country (56 per cent versus 44 per cent).

For others that are asking what a P Plater is:
**Australia has what is called a Provisional Driver and they have to display "P" plate in the front and the back of their car just as a lerner would display an "L" plate. Its so other drivers and the authorities know that a non fully licenced driver is behind the wheel**

I think that the Australian government has compiled statistics on the number of accidents and has determined that based on the statistics that there are a large number of inexperienced drivers involved in them. They also probably have determined by the statistics that speed was a contributing factor in the accidents. Therefore they have responded based on the statistics and have devised an advertising campaign targeting this group because they have proof based on the statistics that this group is more likely to speed and get into accidents. I think it is as simple as that. Here in Canada a very large percentage of accidents involve young people that are new drivers. It doesn't mean that all young/new drivers are bad, or that all young/new drivers speed.
Here in Ontario Canada the statistics showed that there was a correlation between the number of accidents with new drivers and the number of people in the car under the age of 19. There were many accidents with distracted new drivers with a car load of friends. The government responded to this by imposing restrictions on new drivers about the number of passengers under 19 in the car.

Based on the list of complaint areas you provided I don't see how the situation you describes fits any of them.

Yep I know the ad you're talking about and I thoroughly agree with you, there are more fully licenced drivers out there speeding not to mention the other illegal things they do on the road.
