Originally the dispute was about who should be khalifa, Abu bakr was chosen, and Ali didnt dispute it or argue. Others did so on his behalf. In the initial period the beliefs of the groups was the same, but after that the shia started introducing new concepts such as saying Ali was divine, there were twelve special imams who were better than prophets, along with numerous odd issues. Not all Shia believe the same thing though, and some are still close enough to the sunnah. Sunnis follow the sunnah of Muhammad, hence the name and make up 90% of the Muslim population.

No nothing at like it, the Roman Catholic religion was the first Christian, you know the rest where a King thought he would take over the church because the Pope wouldn't allow him to divorce etc.
The Shia and Sunni story is mainly all about which of the Prophet Mohammed's relatives should have taken over after he died, all seems very odd and unimportnt doesnt it? But its important to the religions concerned.
Good luck with your research, keep looking until you reach the truth.

The difference between Sunnis and Shiats is that Sunnis believe that Abu Bakar was the one that was supposed to become the Khalif after the passing of the prophet Mohammed (pbuh) and he actually was the one that became the khalif after the Prophet passed away, but the Shiats believe that it should have been Ali to take over after the passing of the prophet. In the end the truth remains that Shiats and Sunnis pray the same way believe in the same god and everything else except for this small little dispute they have over who it should have been to become the Khalif.

Their dispute is over the caliphate that replaced Mohammad after his death.
Shias regard Ali, Mohammad's son in law and cousine, as his true successor while Sunnis regard Abu Bakr, Mohammad's friend, as his successor.
This difference led to battles and mutiny and finally an expanding sea of conflict b/w the two rival groups; not to mention the hundred dying everyday on the streets of muslim countries.
All the hundres of thousands of death of innocents only on the question of whether it was him or him. Who cares man, they are gone/past now, get a life and live in PEACE!
