I lived in hawaii for three years in the Honlulu kai area. Do not trust the bus because the biggest drug area in the island is china town half way between the airport and the beach, and I wouldn't put my worst enemy on the bus. By the way it is called The Bus. Hotel buses can take hours to get to you, not good with the kids. With a taxi cab it is a crap shoot. Just like cabs anywhere they can screw you big time. It is about $40 to $50 from the airport to waikiki. The best would be to rent a car. It is more expensive but it is the easiest way. Also alot of hotels tell you they have free transportation to all the sights on the island, that always isn't true. All the hotels in the area get together and share a bus to tourist locations. Problem is once the bus is full your buying a cab or waiting for a second trip and getting there late. The best way to see the island is to get out and drive. Most of the really beautiful places on the island you wont see unless you get out on your own. Good luck and enjoy paridise.

Consider a rental car---there's free transportation to the agency to pick up the car, which is often a few blocks from the airport. Shop on-line for good deals.
While your hotel will probably have complementary shuttle buses, you will be wanting to see the rest of the island, not just Waikiki. There are tours available that pick you up at your hotel--- but with two little ones, it seems to me you'd do better following your own agenda and schedule. Oahu is pretty easy to figure out, especially with the maps they give you. Honolulu can be confusing due to many one-way streets--- but it is such a small city--before you know it you are out in the 'country' where there is basically only one main road that goes around the whole island, and one up through the middle. Drivers are generally pretty patient, too; not like the big mainland cities. People are usually content to slow down and watch the scenery, even during their commute. Try to avoid rush hour to and from downtown-- its not LA, but it does get pretty congested.
Locals can point you in the right direction for activities and beaches that are especially suitable for the 'keikis" (kids)
Have fun--
Aloha!

We've taken the wikiki bus and also a cab-take the cab, it's 5 times faster and maybe 10$ more- the bus charges per person and the cab is just one fare-the bus stops along the way at many spots-the cab takes you directly to your hotel-your on vacation-go first class!

Whenever we went, we had a taxi cab meet us at the airport and do the whole aloha lei greeting and then they took us to our hotel. You may try that, but besides that, I dont know because with two children under two years old, I definately wouldnt try the bus because it is very chaotic!

Rental cars are the cheapest way to get from airport to your hotel. Cabs and shuttle buses are scams.

Yes, I would see if your hotel offers airport pickup, otherwise I would use a taxi.
