Probably wax. There's a general religious polarization going on in the world at the moment, people are scared, and when they are scared they seek comfort. Unfortunately the Televangelists and Radical Mullahs are selling a good product.

That said, I think in the longer term, organised religion in general is on the way out, making place for a more personal, responsible spirituality. Think of the next 10 or 15 years as the last gasps, and hope the religious nuts of all backgrounds don't do too much damage before they come to their senses.

I think (and hope) that it will diminish over the next 10 years, for 3 reasons:

First - as more people get educated in science, they tend to adopt a more scientific, rational view of the way the universe works.

Second, public opinions and attitudes tend to work somewhat like a pendulum. Beliefs and attitudes change over time, and they come and they go. The fundamentalists picked up steam during the Reagan administration with the Moral Majority, got more traction when George W. Bush was elected, but are on the outs now, I think.

Third, in the long run, humanity tends to adopt a more liberal, lenient attitude towards others. There are localized areas that don't change as much as others, of course, but in the long term they are tending more and more this way. 200 years ago, blacks were slaves, and women couldn't vote. 100 years ago, women started getting the right to vote, and blacks were severely oppressed. 50 years ago, civil rights started letting blacks vote, but gays were deeply hidden in the closet. now, some states and countries allow gay marriage. Progress is slow, but we'll get there.

Sadly, it seems we're heading into a second Dark Ages with both christiany _and_ islam guilty (last time, it was only the christians while it was the muslims who preserved the Greek's ancient knowledge).

Unlike the last time when religions were able to dominate, this time the enlightened people may have the strength and isolation to withstand the book burnings and wars.

Hopefully wain. I don't know the statistics, but isn't it on the rise in America? Some of these Evangelical preachers have close ties with the Republicans and George Bush's administration. You can count on them being closely involved with government in America for the foreseeable future.
