At Sloppy Joe’s Restaurant a customer was shocked to find a fly in his coffee. He sent the waiter back for a fresh cup. After his first sip, the customer pounded on the table and shouted: "This is the same cup of coffee I had before!" How could he tell?

He had put sugar in the coffee before he saw the fly. When he tasted the returned coffee, it was already sweetened.

Perhaps he didn't know. If he complained that he had the same cup of coffee as before and he actually did, they would very likely replace it and be astonished. If it was a different cup of coffee, the staff would be annoyed, but the original cup of coffee would be thrown out and they would have to give him a new cup of coffee. Regardless, he gets a fresh cup of coffee.
