Is it safe and does Vat have to be paid etc. and is the overall cost worth the bother. Is there anywhere else to buy cheaper than UK

Depends on what camera you are looking at buying!

You may have to pay VAT on it depending on it's value - but - most suppliers across the pond will ask if you want it sent as a gift! Customs usually leave these alone!

It is safe BUT you may have to take into account warranty factors! Remember also that USA operates different voltage to UK, so any cameras with rechargble batteries built in wont work! You would have to buy extra equipment to step down the voltage! Normal batteries are no problem!

Then there is the possibility that it may get lost in transit! It can also take up to a month to arrive (normally only ten days though).

Overall, if you are buying a camera check the prices online here first! There is quite a difference in pricing across the pond but when you weigh up all the pros and cons - it might not be worth it!

The most important point to bear in mind, apart from the taxation implications, is that the warranty is unlikely to be honoured in the UK. Further, you will not get the benefits of UK consumer protection legislation (goods deemed to fit for purpose, can be returned at no cost within a reasonable time etc). Whilst there might be similar legislation in the state you buy from in the USA, think of the problems of enforcing those rights.

You have to pay import duty plus VAT. So no, it is not worth it. Do a comparison with several online sites in the UK and you will get a better deal.

If the cost is over £16.00 then you will have to pay our VAT plus import tax (rate at discretion of customs) in addition you have to pay the Royal Mail approx £15.00 for collecting the tax on behalf of Customs & Excise

Check out: http://www.bestwholesaleelectronics.com They have a good selection of consumer electronics at good prices. I have bought several items from them and turned around to sell them on ebay for profit.
