Help, I am at my wits' end with trying to toilet train our puppy. I just feel as if no progress is being made. I can stand outside with him for as much as 20 mins then he'll come back inside and mess on the floor. My house smells, I'm ready to weep, poor little puppy must wonder what is going on! Any clues borne of your own experience?

Lovely people thank you for all your answers so far. My puppy is 10 weeks old and hasn't had all jabs yet so can't go for a walk except around house. It is a terrier

Dont give up he is just learning what he needs to do. 10 weeks old is still very young so accidents will happen. I would take him out after doing things like eating, playing, as soon as he has awoken from a nap and before bedtime. Also take him out every 20 mins or so into the garden put him on the lead and walk around the garden he will not be able to play whilst on the lead so will not get distracted so hopefully will toilet. (this will also get him used to the lead ready for his first walk. As soon as he does any bussiness make a huge fuss and treat him (have some treats in your pocket) then go inside. You can give him a command like hurry up or go wee wee this will make life easier when he is older and your kicking him out before bed. If he does mess inside just clear it away using biological washing powder solution and dont say anything to him. He will not understand he has done wrong so nothing will be gained from telling him off at this stage. Remember he is just a baby which needs to be shown what to do. just be patient and consistant and he will get the message.

Firstly never rub your dogs nose in any mess he has made - he will not associate what you're doing with where he went to the toilet and will just become upset and nervous of you. It's best to start putting the puppy outside when he is most likely to need to go to the toilet - these are usually when he wakes from a nap, after eating, first thing in the morning and last thing at night - if you are waiting outside with him for that long you may just be picking times when he dosn't need to go. When he does go outside praise him lots so he knows he's done good. If you are taking him out at the correct times and still having no joy maybe take him for a short walk, still praising him when he goes. If there is a specific place inside that he is always going put paper there and if you catch him going move him outside straight away. Toilet training can feel like a loosing battle but as long as your patient and consistent you'll get there in the end. Try buying a pet odour eliminator spray to clean the areas where he's been - this will get rid of the smell in your house and also mask the smell to the pup so he won't keep going back to that spot. You can buy products like this from your vet or a good pet store. One other thing to think of is make sure the puppy is up to date with his worming - worms can sometimes give animals an upset tummy meaning he may not always be able to hold it. Good luck to you and your pup!

Ok this method should work within 2 weeks... First find an area in your home where you can put newspapers down. When your puppy goes wee/poo on the floor pick him up and put him on the papers ( even if its mid way through ) If he has done one and you find it, smack him and put his nose in it then put him on the papers. He will relise after a awhile that this is the place to go toliet. Once he has this mastered, everytime you see him goto the papers for a toilet quickly take him outside.Obouisly this wont work when your out or asleep but at least he will be going on your papers...a couple of weeks he will be trained. good luck and dont give up it really will work i done this with my dog when he was a puppy, he is 4 now and he has never eva done a toliet on the house.

Have you tried the Puppy trainer pads ?? They are a little waterproof mat with something in it that attracts the puppy to poop on it. This will contain it to one area until pup goes outdoors. Just perservere - it does take time but give plenty of praise and treats for success on going outside xxx

Also - make sure every trace of the accident is cleared up otherwise pup will smell it and do it again in the house xxx

Don't let an untrained puppy have the run of the house. Confine him to a cleanable spot like the bathroom tile. Put lots of newspapers down and praise the puppy when he goes on the newspaper. When he eats, he will soon need to poop. That is instinct. So take a used piece of newspaper and take the puppy for a walk. Put the newspaper down and keep the puppy on it until he does his business, then praise him.

You dont say how old your puppy is....if you are watching him in the garden for 20 mins, why not take him for a walk instead, take some treats with you and praise him if he goes. Or just leave him in the garden on his own and watch through the window and when he goes, again praise him for doing good.

get a crate and crate train him. bring him in and take him right back out if you see him starting to search or is in the act of going potty. say let's go potty. you may have to be out 30-45 mins at first. don't play with him or show any attention, just keep saying let's go potty. once he does and is finished then praise the heck outa him. be consistant and patient. he's a pup and it will take time. good luck.

Never clear up dog mess in front of dog, he will think you are interested in it and do again just to please you. Always take dog outside as soon as it wakes from sleeping and after a meal. When you do see him do his business give a command to it..."good busy" or "good be quick" that way he will learn when you say be busy or quick he should toilet. Always give loads of praise when he does perform and ignore when he has accidents. NEVER rub his nose in it unless you want him to fear you rather than love you.
