my son is suffering from nose bleeding for the past 4 days. Even at night time his nose will bleed without any reason. I brought him to the EENT specialist, but the doctor said it maybe due to my son's fingernail because my son used to insert his fingernails into his nose. I'm not really convinced with the doctor's theory because even when my son is soundly sleeping, his nose will still bleed with so much blood.

Epistaxis (nose bleed) can be caused by different factors...trauma such as nose picking is by far the most common and bleeding disorder. Dry air or low humidity can also produce epistaxis.
Complete work up should be done to rule out other possible cause.

Important thing is how you manage during episodes of epistaxis to avoid aspiration of blood.

Hope this will help.

Your son isn't a hemophilliac if you are thinking that or he'd have bleed to death without medication to control bleeding.

It sounds like he has nose bleeds brought on by cold dry weather if you live in a cold and/or snowy area. Many kids get nose bleeds in the winter. Try using a humidifier by his bed for a week, and see if that helps. Also purchase SALIN nose drops, they are non-medicated and will help if it's a dry nose, don't use for weeks, just until the bleeding stops, but you can keep using the humidifier throughout the winter if you find it helps. It will take a day or two to begin to work. Allergies can also cause nose bleeding in children.

If the problem doesn't improve in a week of trying the Humidifier, then take him to a ENT who specializes in children, not adults and children or to an allergist. Don't jump to the worse case possible, without evaluating him for common causes in children, such as winter causing dry sinuses due to the heating in homes, etc. and allergies, many of which can be seasonal, occuring only in the winter. Also if you live in a really hot climate, the heat and air-conditioning can cause dry sinsus as well.

To rule out for sure that he's not picking his nose in his sleep, which is common when children's noses get dry, they'll pick in their sleep because they can't breath freely. Check his fingernails in the morning to see if he has blood in them or crusty burgers. Kids will not wake up when doing this; I've seen first hand many kids pick until they bleed and sleep through it or wake up only because they feel blood all over their own face.

Stay calm, it's likely just dry sinuses.

GOOD LUCK!

A nose bleed or nosebleedage, medically known as epistaxis. The cause of nosebleeds can generally be divided into two categories, local and systematic factors.

[edit] Local factors
Anatomic deformities
Chemical inhalant
Inflammatory reaction (eg. acute respiratory tract infections, chronic sinusitis, allergic rhinitis and environmental irritants)
Foreign bodies
Intranasal tumors (Nasopharyngeal carcinoma in adult and juvenile angiofibroma in adolescent males)
Nasal prong O2, continuous positive airway pressure therapy
Nasal spray
Surgery (such as septoplasty and endoscpoic sinus surgery)
Trauma

[edit] Systemic factors
Alcohol (due to vasodilation)
Allergies
Blood dyscrasias
Heart failure (due to an increase in venous pressure)
Hematological malignancy
Hypertension
Infectious diseases
Malnutrition (especially anemia)
Narcotics
Stress
Triggers via Hypnosis
Vascular disorders
Muscle tightness as caused by scoliosis (the tightened muscles cause blood vessels to be come constricted, resulting in nosebleeds from the same side as the tightened muscles).

[edit] Pathophysiology
All nosebleeds are due to tears in the mucosal lining and the many small blood vessels it contains
