Hi Besty...consider Nature's Miracle "Just For Cats" (not plain Nature's Miracle) found worldwide at most pet stores. It's an enzymatic neutralizer which works by breaking down urine proteins by thoroughly soaking the areas affected and allowing to air dry. Repeated applications are necessary for heavily soiled areas.

We've tested nearly all enzyme neutralizers available in the marketplace for our exotic cats which have stronger urine than domestic cats and found that Nature's Miracle Just for Cats has always worked the best.

To lift discoloured stains OxyClean or hydrogen peroxide the active ingredient in OxyClean works as well. Test spot for colour fastness first before using as this can lighten carpeting.

Unfortunately cat wee is very smelly stuff and hard to get rid of. I use biological washing powder in warm water. The enzymes in the powder break down the chemicals that cause the smell. It does work. Normal carpet cleaners mask the smell for a while but it can come back even stronger. A cat is also more likely to relieve itself in the same area again if they can still smell it.

Good luck! Not much fun!

Bicarb soda and vinegar (cleaning vinegar).

Simply sprinkle bicarb on the spot then poor vinegar over it. It will form a bubbly liquid that lifts the stain. Then absorb the excess liquid with a paper towel/napkin.

This achieves a similar effect as commercial carpet cleaning products but is safer and cheaper. It also gets rid of the smell and stops the pet from going in the same place again (as they can not sense/smell they have been to the toilet there before).

Spot clean only with water-based shampoo or foam upholstery cleaner. Make sure that you pretest for color loss and fabric compatibility. Do not over wet.

Follow up with a small amount of ammoniated liquid detergent. Rinse, let dry, and then vacuum.

Steam clean it. If you don't want to do that, repeated treatments with soap and water will bring the stains to the surface, and will eventually go away.
