Because their habitats are being destroyed and/or they are being hunted to near extinction.

It usually seems to be habitat destruction, humans cutting down trees for fuel. When the trees go, the soil goes and the land becomes barren. People cut down more trees and it happens again, with whole mountainsides denuded. Species further down the food-chain disappear, so the predators find food scarce.

With some animals, such as the snow-leopard, the wearing of their fur on ceremonial coats is prestigious, and they are hunted for that. The Dalai Lama has spoken out against the use of endangered species' fur, and although he is respected by all outside China, because of the situation in Tibet the Chinese authorities delight in belittling him, and recently it has been the fashion for Chinese TV newsreaders to wear coats decorated with such fur.

They have such a restricted habitat as it is. It's not like they can just up and move.
