My dog ran awy from the doggie sitters, and she was gone for about 9 months, and we finally found her, and now she is living with us again, and sometmes, I'll do something, like put on some lotion that I had before she ran away, and its like she'll jump up, likes she remembers that smell.

Yes. Dogs have an extremely good memory and can recognize people and dogs by their smell. They can recognize people that they haven't seen in a long time and even people that they have only seen a couple of times. There are stories that dogs have found their way home because they remember the way perfectly.

Dogs can absolutely remember people. We got our Dobie when he was 10 weeks old, and less than 2 months later my husband was deployed overseas to Iraq. He came home for a 2 week visit after 6 months away, and then home for good after 8 more months, and the Dobie puppy remembered him both times. We were surprised but thrilled that such a young puppy had such a good memory. Of course, now he has separation anxiety every time my husband leaves for work!

Yes, they do remember things........... did you ever see "The Homeward Journey" or whatever that movie was called where they traveled across country to get home?
Don't underestimate their intelligence, just be THANKFUL you got your doggie back and PLEASE get her microchipped so that this will hopefully not happen again.
I am ASSUMING she already has a collar with ID tags, etc, but these can be removed for bathing and such and a microchip cannot. Any shelter or vet who receives a stray dog will AUTOMATICALLY check for a microchip.
I wish you the BEST of luck, you are EXTREMELY lucky to get your dog back after that long, please don't take a chance again. Most of the "low cost clinics" that go to the local pet store once a month or so will offer microchipping. It shouldn't be more than $50 or so.

Definitely it is what makes people and dogs a very good mix. I once read that a dog can smell your fingerprint on something for up to 6 weeks after you have been there, so not only do they remember they remember every aspect of you.

So she would be defiantly in tune with that smell

sure they do.

I stayed with a friend,s dog for about 3 months when she was away. 2 years down the line it still remembers the games I used to play with it. I am not a frequent visitor. I go there after 6 months or so.

I have to agree with you. Mady was stolen and gone from me for almost 3 months. When the police recovered her from her theives, and brought her home to me, the window of the jeep she was in was the only thing that separated us and oh my, if that wasn't there, she would have been in my arms immediately. She was that enthusiatic to be home with her mommy. She was only a puppy when I lost her, 8 months, and was under 1 year when I got her back. So in the short 6 months I had her before she was lost made that much of an impression on her.

Her sense of smell is 40 times what we humans have. So she remembers the smells associated with you more than the old habits or other physical surroundings. Hope she adapts, but I bet she does!! I'll keep my fingers crossed for you!! Wow, you found her after all those months!! Probably surprised you!! Tough little girl there!! Good Luck!! @8=)

It depends but all dogs are different just like us people. You know how some people excelled without even study and some get F for having memory loss. Lotion is a good memory booster for her, I bet. Take few moments for her to remember, if she still can't, you could always start all over again.

Probably she can remember the smell. Dogs have a sense of smell that is over 17,000 times more powerful than that sense in human beings. The sense of smell, more than any other sense, triggers memories. It seems highly likely that some memories are being triggered in her that are associated with smelling things that you used before she got lost.

My folks when I was a kid had sold a puppy (they show dogs, she was a pet) and after about 7-8 years the people came back for a visit. We met them at the airport and she certainly remembered us as she nearly wagged herself in two. It was awesome to see. I'm certain that dogs can remember. Just as they certainly can feel love, hurt, pain, and most of the other emotions uncaring people say they don't. I love dogs, they're so awesome...
