Children play these games to occupy them as they walk along on the paving stones. They are very protective of their mothers, so they will go to great lengths not to step on a crack between the pavings. That's all: it's just a game. Next time they walk that way they will be playing something else!

It was a kids thing way back when you would step on a crack in the sidewalk, like a kids game.

it's a stupid old superstition.
if you step on the crack in the sidewalk, your mother's back will break. It's not true, and it's stupid.

It was unlucky to step on the cracks between paving stones. Thats a better version than my Great Grandmother used to tell me. Please remember she was from a different era;
'Step on a crack, you'll marry a darkie.'

It's just a game little kids play when they are walking on a side walk of anywhere that has cracks.
I myself used to play that game when I was little at school.
I knew it wasn't true but it was fun!!
