i'm shopping around for a yerba mate gourd; wood or natural. But I don't know what size to get; how many ounces is a good size for one to a small group of people?

mine is the size of my two fists put together (and if you're a guy as seen from your avatar, I suppose, one of your fists should be the right size) - I don't know how many ounces or ml is in there, but probably the same like in an ordinary tea mug, and it's just right for me.
and for more people I think you should get more gourds, same size as for yourself

In the yerba mate country people know about kilos. My suggestion is, get something with capacity of two pounds.Get a good one, remember the yerba must be keep it in a dry place.
