I have had a the same problem, I was afraid I would make myself look foolish by say something stupid, or I might offend someone. As I got older (grandma here) I started not worrying, so much about what others think, of me or my opinions. Even if people disagree on a subject, it doesn't always mean they are right and you are wrong. A lot of times, it is just a difference of opinion, I think, then you should try to agree to disagree. That can be difficult at times, some people are very adamant about subjects they are passionate about. But, you have a right to your opinion and to express them. Although, I think you should do it in a respectful way and try to be open to others viewpoint. You could take a class in public speaking, a lot of community colleges have credit and non-credit classes to improve your communication skills. I think it would boost your confidence and they give you pointers on how to carry on affective conversations.
Good luck and keep in touch with yourself
