Watch Jeopardy!, read the encyclopedia (I'm not joking), read a good general-interest newspaper such as The Christian Science Monitor (weird religion, great paper), read general-interest magazines such as Newsweek and Time.

You need to read widely to improve your GK. In case you dont want to start by reading so widely, newspapers are the best source to improve your knowledge. The only disadvantage is you dont get much articles about science in newspapers. But if you have the time and resources nothing can beat the www in providing you the information. A way I have been improving my general knowledge lately has been researching answers to questions here on Yahoo!Answers and investigating what those answers might be. I became a teacher in part because I like to learn things then I teach them to others.

yaa read a lot of books..newpapers and all...then practice solving the qwestions ,,wikipedia will be of gr8 help..always participate in quizzig events..and lo u have confidence ..
in the end its the confidence which does half ur work..
