if you're wanting to lose weight:
go for a managable time, it's more important that you use it everyday, than twice as long every second day. then step up to twice a day (eg. morning and evening)

if you want to build muscle:
use it on the highest resistance that you can handle, and for long periods of time instead of multiple short exercises as above :)

At least 20 minutes. It takes18 minutes before you start burning fat from cells.

You're better off going running if you're trying to burn fat and tone your legs. 100 calories per mile!
