I've taken Yoga classes before and really liked it. I was wondering about pilates though. Are pilates as good/better/ worse than yoga? I'm trying to lose weight but firm my abs, arms, legs and just about everywhere else you can think of.

I understand that a person with spinal problems or other physical problems should take pilates instead of yoga because pilates need an instructor or coach to teach you the moves & also caution you about the position that you can stretch.

It'll start off with pilates matworks then gradually moves to the equipments.

I have never tried pilates but I know that nowadays there is a special class that combines both yoga & pilates - Yogalates. Maybe you may check out where you live if there is such a class.

I personally is also a Yoga person. I can never fit into the gym equipments as I have back problems that prevents me from going to the gym. Hence, I can only stick to Yoga Therapy & Hot Yoga as well as occasional swims.

For arms maybe you can try exercising with dumb-bells, abs some sit-ups or leg lifts, legs some treadmill exercises or ride a bicycle.

In any case, I think no 2 persons will have the same results even though they stick to the same exercise routine. So everyone has to find their own special unique exercise routine.

Happy Exercising!

Pilates is AWESOME!! I highly recommend Stott Pilates. I started with Firm & Fit (it is level 2 of a 4 level system, but she has many many other pilates dvds to choose from on her site). Don't do Winsor Pilates because even though at first it is good, after you get familiar with the moves you will really get annoyed at how much she talks in between exercises.

but, for weightloss you will need to incorporate some kind of cardio like walking, because pilates is for toning.

There is really a lot more to getting in shape than most will admit. Diet is a big part of physical fitness and being active regularly. You want to make sure you don't over do it when starting out at exercising. I highly recommend purchasing the book from Paul Chek titled "How to Eat, Move and Be Healthy!" It takes fitness to it's next level. There are over 4,000 diet books out there and out of that there are only 6 or so that actually cater to specific individual needs. Although we all are humans there are differences that really do matter when it comes to the foods we eat. Also check out Dr. Mercola and find out what your metabolic type is. It's not an easy road to healthy living but if you get into a good routine and stick with it, you will go very far and live a much happier life.

Stick with yoga if you like it atleast you will feel comfortable, and try a bit of pilates on the side and see if ya like that also. When you say is it better or worse do you mean burn more calories? cause pilates probably wins there, someone suggested swimming this would be my preference.
