Sounds pretty gender-neutral to me. I'd be really careful calling my dog that name, though. It's phonetically similar to a more embarassing word that I wouldn't want to be hollering out if 'ol Peanut got loose outside.

either - its a very cute name, I imagin a dog such as a wire haired dachshund or shih tzu to be called peanut

It can be either way, but I think of it more as a female name.
