how do you spell and define the term, faux pau for an etiquette mistake?

I tried to find a definition and spelling on various refernce sites. No luck. The spelling I gave, is probably wrong.

(By the way, I believe in French it means "false step", as in, you put your foot in the wrong place. An appropriate term, don't you think?)
