A subwoofer handles all the deep bass sounds. I have one for my laptop with two regular speakers otherwise known as a 2.1 setup. A sub makes all the difference. You really don't get the same quality of sound if you can't hear all the bass. I highly reccomend getting a sub. A sub is a bass speaker basically.

Classically we go back to HI FI, yes, not stereo, good old fashioned HI FI. Speakers back then all had paper cones and we had little ones and big ones. Then we found out we could get better frequency response by having three of them. So, we had "tweeters", "mid-range" (some were [and still are] horns), and big ones for "base". We then found that we had lots of highs and mid tones but wanted more base, so we found that by cutting a hole in the front under the "big one" we got "base reflex" by sending the sound from the back of the speaker out the port cut in the front! Then came stereo, etc.etc. and much smaller speakers with much better magnets and paper cones gave way to Pollyprope. The base reflex concept faded as the new world of sub-woofers came along. These are systems designed to have a very low rollover. Typically a sub operates from 20 Hz and lower while a base speaker may well pass 50 to 60 Hz. There are crossover networks in most speakers systems that limit the pass band of frequency's that are sent to which ever speaker, 10k and above to the tweeters, 60 Hz to 12k to the mids and all lower to the base and subs. The Bose wave guide system is a whole different ball game.

A subwoofer and a bass speaker are very nearly the same thing. The only real difference is that a subwoofer reproduces the very low frequencies, such as the bass drum or the pedals of an organ, the most faithfully. If you can afford one, definitely get one.

A bass speaker is a subwoofer. They handle the lower end of the sound frequencies. So yes having one (or more) will make a large difference to what you will heard. Explosions and other sound effects will be more real.
