I've never been to one either. I know people bring kids, so if it's outside, you might be able to bring a chihuahua (ask first though). I don't see any reason why you couldn't take photos. As far as content, I hear it's a lot of (as in a few hour's worth) boring speeches and official ramble. Half the soldiers wouldn't even go if it weren't mandatory for them.

The day my husband deployed (both times) there were no formal pictures taken. We showed up, dropped off his stuff, he stood in line for his weapon, did some accountability formations to make sure everyone was there and to get their bus assignments, had some family time and then had a formation before getting on the bus.

When my husband has his deployment ceremony, it was held inside the Armory building. The Governor was there, along with the state Congressman. There were 15 different news networks set up to record and broadcast the entire ceremony from start to finish. No you cant take your dog to the ceremony. That is just disrespectful. Yes you can take pictures and video. The ceremony lasted for 2 hours with refreshments afterward.

I assume it's more or less the same as the casing of the colors. Do not take your dog. It's more formal than that. You can take your dog to organizational days; not to ceremonies. There will probably be at least one general officer there, and you don't want him searching out the guy whose wife bought a dog.
