Yeah, I normally use acrylic, too. One very important thing is paint thinner, so you can fix your mistakes.

I think you can layer oils using a palette knife. Those are cheap to get plastic ones at the store for 50 cents each or something. You could also just use a plastic or metal butter knife.

I don't know what liquid white is....

The paint thinner should have instructions for how to clean the brushes. I'm pretty sure you just soak the brushes in the paint thinner (you really don't need much) and then when all of the paint seems to be gone, you rinse the paint thinner off using water. It will dry your hands out a lot, so you might want to use latex gloves.

I know oil paint is thicker than acrylic, so that is partially how it can layer better than acrylic.

This makes me want to go paint! Good luck!

It would be good to get an Oil Binder(This Helps to keep the Paint moving over the canvas).
Clean brushes with white spirit, also can be used for diluting the Paints.
Oil takes ages to dry in Normal conditions(Dry too fast, and it will crack-Especially if you paint Impasto).
When the Oil has dried you can varnish it(Clear or satin Finish).
The Past masters of Oils would leave their work to dry for Years!!!

you'll need some gesso...thats basically your primer for you canvas. you'll also want to get terpentine..or turpenoid.(less toxic) that will clean your brushes, and be sure to use a little soap and water after you clean them. and as far as layering ...its done by letting the different layers dry then going back in and painting over it. you can use gel meduims as well...such as some lin seed oil to thin out the paint...it all depends on your style. good luck!!
