.......he says he needs a friend not a relationship. I'm very understanding of this but should I stand my ground and eventhough we're apart should I be the greatest friend in hopes he'll see how devoted I am to him? There's a saying that goes "Behind every great man there is a great woman and that woman stands by her lover and protector no matter what". I honestly believe this but I want to know if it's common in indian men who are dating someone to put a relationship aside for the job but still hope to keep in touch?

People do this all the time. But it really depends on one's priorities. What comes first career or family/relationship.
Sometimes sacrifices need to be made and often they're just out of pride, arrogance and the wish for recognition.
