If you own a Windows XP Home licence, the key is usually on a sticker afflixed to your computer. It's called COA (Certificate of Authenticity). If you have a desktop, the sticker is probably on the main computer unit. If you have a laptop, it's on the back of your computer (turn it upside down).

If you installed winxp from a CD/DVD that you bought separately, then the serial should be there, on the CD/DVD case.

I think you can call Microsoft and as long as you can verify that you own the license they will give you a new key. Also, for the future, if you hold the Win key and push L it locks your computer (needing a password) so that your son can't mess up anything. Everything stays running like before, it only can't be accessed by anyone except you.

Product key for every version of XP has a different product key to avoid tampering. So it wont work, unless it is crack version which accept any product key. But crack version is prohibited by the law. So don't use it. You can buy a new XP cd to have your own product key.

If your computer is bootable, then you can use this program, http://www.magicaljellybean.com/keyfinder.shtml, to find your product key. If your computer, however, is not bootable, then the best bet would be buy a new copy.
