Or do they use set kitchens? It seems like they have too many chefs on the Food Network to not film in the stars' own kitchens, but that seems like an invasion of privacy...

Sandra Lee is not in her own kitchen, it's a set modeled after her own home. Alton Brown's set is also modeled after the kitchen in his former home.

Paula Deen's new shows, from the last season, are filmed in her new home in Georgia, previous to that she was filming in a house in upstate New York.

Ina Garten (The Barefoot Contessa) films her show in her home on Long Island.

Michael Chiarello's show is filmed in his home in Napa, California.

Bobby Flay's "Boy Meets Grill" show is filmed at the home of a friend of his, in New York City.

Giada DeLaurentiis, Rachael Ray, Emeril Lagasse, Mario Batali, Bobby Flay, Tyler Florence, Sara Moulton, Cici Carmichael, Guy Fiore, The Hearty Boys and other hosts are all in studio kitchens.

Food Network Kitchens

Food Network almost never cooks in the person's actual kitchen. Sometimes they use sets (ie Rachel Ray's 30 Minute Meals) and in other instances they actually pay people to use their houses to stage the show (ie Everyday Italian). Paula Dean not only used someone else's kitchen (Gordon Elliot's) for the first several seasons of her show, but she also used other people's dogs to sit in as her own pets.
Julia Child used to film in her own kitchen, and I remember reading an interview where she said that it was something of a pain to do this. Plus, the structure has to be able to take the weight if a bunch of heavy equipment is being brought in to film the show, and the neighbors might not like all the activity of a film crew being on location.
Food Network did a "behind-the-scenes" show that gave details on how and where some of their programs are filmed. Watch for a repeat.

We provide kitchen locations for many cookery film shoots. These are most commonly kitchens located in people's houses but sometimes commercial kitchens can be used.

Our location owners tend to most enjoy the shoots where a chef is preparing a dish whilst describing the process facing the camera. In such cases the production company will usually invite the kitchen owner to taste or consume all of the food that has been prepared, and they may get to talk and discuss recipes or techniques with the Chef too!

The most common kitchens used in these sort of shoots have an island with 2 or 3 metres of space to the side and to the front of the island. By having the space it means that film crews can position their lights and cameras, but still have room for varying camera angles.

The style of kitchen can vary quite dramatically. They may be modern kitchens, rustic or even retro kitchens. Each has a place but always depends on the style that the client is looking for.

Kitchen based recipe shoots generally take about 10 hours, however some can be only half a day. In most cases these shoots are 1 day in duration and there is no requirement for owners to vacate the property.

More information about how to register a kitchen for use in filming can be found at www.kitchenfilmlocations.co.uk which is a specialist site where owners can register their kitchens, and production companies go to choose kitchen locations for their shoots.

For the most part, no. Those are cooking studios. Some shows on there, there is a prototype already cooked to show you what the finished product looks like after being fully prepared and cooked.

the best way is to start basic with like an original betty crocker cook book and best way is trial and error. try things u like first whether its baking (cakes cookies breads) or grilling meats or making side dishes or casseroles. stick with the recipes at first its important to do exactly what they say. and practice makes perfect it may not taste just how u want it the first time around don't get discouraged after the 2nd or 3rd time u will have the hang of it more. once u get that down u can try experimenting a lil. it really is a learning process. it does take time and practise, mostly have fun with it . hope this helps a lil. :)

I have an Uncle who used to have a cooking show. He said he cooked on a set and all the other chefs did too.

Giada is in her own kitchen... So is Paula Dean, Sandra Lee, and The Barefoot Contessa... The only one not doing it is that idiot Rachael Rae. Does she even have a house? I bet her condo wouldn't let her shoot there. Actually Emeril isn't either, but he's cool.
